How to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Children

Every year from September 15 through October 15, Americans honor National Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing and celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

Hispanic Heritage Month provides every child the opportunity to explore the diversity within the Hispanic population and the significance of past and present Hispanic influences on our society.

One in four kids in the US is of Hispanic origin and representation matters; this month not only allows Hispanic children to celebrate their culture but encourages all children to learn about the culture — this can help raise individuals that respect and celebrate the differences in all people.

How can you celebrate with kids? There is a wide range of options!

• Have a Movie Night. Both The Book of Life and Coco can introduce children to time-honored traditions within the culture.

• Get Crafty! Whether you want to make paper fiesta flowers or a DIY mini piñata, these hands-on activities offer interactive ways to teach kids about different cultures.

• Explore Online Expositions! There are a variety of organizations hosting online expos, from the Museum of Latin American Art to a full calendar of events hosted by the Smithsonian Institute and online exhibits by the National Archives. Any of these are a great way to explore the Hispanic culture from the comfort of your own home!

• Cook a Traditionally Hispanic meal. Grab a recipe from a cookbook or look through Allrecipes “World Cuisine” section for some quick and easy meal ideas to cook with your kids.

• Start Spanish Lessons. Learn as a family — it can be as simple as starting with counting to 10 or word-picture matches to learn about another culture’s language.
